I've Just Seen a Post
Well, I've been back "full time" now for a few weeks, and some things just don't change. I've been posting a lot primarily at ThinkProgress (affectionately known to us as "TP"), and it's likely that most of you visiting this blog know me from there. I thank all of you for coming back. Now that I can do this from home, I can do it more often. Before, when I could only do this from my computer at work, I either had to stay late, come in early, or sneak in for a few minutes during the day. It wasn't quite working out, hence my ban from internet access at work.
Anywho, I've noticed that TP still has a problem with trolls. Trolls are people who jump into a topic and post false, misleading, deceptive or inflammatory remarks with the sole purpose of derailing the conversation so that we waste our time, and the site master's bandwidth. They often have no rational basis for the things they say. They know that if they jump in and say something like, "Liberals are baby-killers," they'll get a reaction. They aren't interested in discussing anything rationally. They're just trying to piss us off. Unfortuantely, they all too often succeed.
The ironic thing is that while they often accuse us of trying to suppress free speech, if you go to one of the more popular conservative websites (such as Redstate.org) and post something even the tiniest bit critical of Bush or Republicans in general, they ban you. (At least, that's what some have said.) I guess the truth hurts.
So, my experiences since I returned to the blogosphere inspired me to write another song parody. This is to the tune of The Beatles' "I've Just Seen a Face". (Original words and music by John Lennon and Paul McCartney.) I wanted to have it finished by yesterday, but I couldn't quite get it done. Consider it a belated birthday present to Sir (James) Paul McCartney, whose birthday was the 18th. I hope you enjoy it. As usual, thank you Jane for your help and advice.

I agree there are many Trolls that cannot debate at all. I am guilty of trolling another way quite often though. I sort of use something I call "reverse trolling" (Patented by Tundra Inc. and can only be used with expressed written permission).
Here's how it works:
A topic is posted saying something like "– RNC account use far greater than believed: Despite White House spokesperson Dana Perino’s claim that 50 White House officials used RNC email accounts “over the course of the administration,” the committee learned that at least 88 White House officials had RNC e-mail accounts."
I then point out that "having" and "using" e-mail accounts are two different things.
Notice I didn't "Defend" having them, I didn't say anything about the legality of them being there.
Next I sit and wait. (Refresh) (Refresh). Usually sooner than later someone one pops up and says something like "How can you say that! I guess the constitution doesn't mean anything to you!!! Article Blah Blah Blah says you can't do that (Mental note: Tundra look that up later cause you will need it in some discussion). I then enter a symantec debate for a minute and get them (or someone else who takes it all wrong) to throw some other statute at me that I can use later. Let them continue down their little path until they generalize the heck out of me (Doesn't take long) and then ask for an example of whenever I said such things.
Basically I don't "defend" any position, but use each one to learn a little something. Granted it is often a little off topic (See above) but it fosters discussions.
All sides have trolls though, You spoke of TP. There are many trolls on the Left there as well. They are the ones that in every discussion say "Bushco and Rethuglicans are all pedophiles etc.", "See another example of why all CONservatives hate Amerikkka". They never discuss the topic (Or heck any topic for that matter) and only have their blind hatred for everything Bush to guide them. Sadly posters like that on either side don't do any party justice.
I have alot to learn about politics and political history myself, but I try and limit the amount of times I say something I can't back up with hard facts (and at least try and admit when I do)
That's why I like discussing things with you guys, you actually read what is written and respond to that. There are alot of people who take a statement and put it in either the Black or White pile of things and ASSUME you are against their view.

No, not at all, the "libtrolls" usually only stick around a couple weeks and then are bored because they have no new ways to spell conservative. Some of the Republican ones, just don't bore easy (Guess it's why they are still supporting Bush. Motivated people, you have to give them that) and stick around like a case of Herpes.
We haven't had a whole lot of discussions but you never struck me as a troll by any means. One of the big things I like about Wayne and Jane is that they can disagree, have a good discussion and we all realize there are many different opinions out there. A different opinion doesn't make someone a bad person.
A discussion on trolls, finally something I can get into, heh. But feel free to challenge my view on anything on TP, I won't take it personal and love the discussions, helps me grow.
Oh yeah, sometimes I do "Devil's Advocate" a position to see what the real objection people have to it is or if they are just party line dancing.

I learn more and more every day, too, such as your M.O. (And at least one of your "secret indentities.) :)
Unless I'm dealing with someone I detest, I try to be civil. I go to TP to try to hone my debating skills, as it helps me solidify my own position on things. The better I can articulate my points of view, the more secure I feel about them. For me, the trick is to try to focus on what the person is trying to say, rather than the wauy they are saying it. For many people, words fail them at times. When I see a troll (like The Joker) show up and say contradictory things (sometimes in one post), I tend to dismiss them or I decide to have fun with them. [If The Joker had not jumped out and attacked me and Jay Randal by calling us "Muslim agentas", I probably would have ignored him. And despite his denials (he obviously has his facts wrong), I was not convinced he wasn't a paid troll.]
And, of course, I can't stay serious all the time, hence the reason you're all here on this particular post. The Third Party one below is more serious, though, and I would really like to see more people have the courage to consider "firing" the Democratic and Republican parties. Let them all go to the Green Party, the Right-to-Life Party, the Liberal Party and the Conservative Party, and I wouldn't care if they got re-elected, provided they were spread around. But we, as a nation, have to get away from this idea that there are two, and only two, sides to every issue. Often there are many.

As for trolling, I do a bit of what Tundra does, however the majority of mine just go towards the inane. If I can some how insult/mock anything with out going to far I go for it. Then, once the people are pissed at me, if the discussion is worth it I slip into semantics mode and just have fun pointing out logical fallacies in the other sides arguement.
Sometimes satire is the best way to expose an evil. Don't believe everything you see or read because you may be fighting with someone on the same side.
